Default GWx2 + Texmod and EULA...

Have been trying to get texmod to work with GWx2 for a while, nothing would work until I thought of something incredibly simple: renaming the gw.exe on the 2nd GW folder, starting the original GW with texmod like usual and manually start the 2nd now renamed gw.exe. This worked actually, and didn't need GWx2 for anything. But my somewhat stupid question is: does renaming the game executable is in any way an infraction of the EULA or anything kind of rule, resulting in any kind of punishment from Anet? I suppose not but for some reason I seem to remember something against renaming the game's executables either beeing a break of the EULA or getting it flagged has a hacked .exe ...

Technically, any modification of the client breaks the rules. Practically speaking, I'm 99% sure they don't care if all you do is rename the gw.exe. ANet has said that GWx2, TexMod, and running multiple clients are all allowed, but not supported.

Try contacting support if you are concerned about being flagged as a "hacked" client.

Thanks for that. I emailed plaync support this morning, they replied to me in about 15 minutes only to say they've escalated my ticket for further assistance and they'd get back to me shortly. That was 8 hours ago and I still haven't received anything so I'll just have to wait for an official word.

However, after some googling I found this old tutorial wich mentions renaming the gw.exe to gw2.exe so I take it it's ok after all. Still just to be sure and for the others sake, I'll post here whatever plaync replies to me.

That guide was why I figured they wouldn't mind, but I don't know why the thread was deleted. More recently, someone asked Gaile Gray a similar question that mentions renaming the gw.exe. Link here:

You might try contacting her as well for help with Support.

Unfortunatly she doesn't answer that specific question... PlayNC support still hasn't replied to me, but I found out how to do what I originally wanted anyway.

Unfortunately for me I already used that renamed gw.exe about 2 nights ago and didn't remember it until today lol. In any case, nothing happened to either of my 2 accounts so I take it it's safe though I'll still wait for the support response to do that again. Thanks for your help MisterB.

Got the answer today, might as well share it if anyone was wondering the same as I was.

Hello.

I'm a Guild Wars player. Reading through the EULA, it states that any
modification to the game client is a breach of the EULA, but does that also
apply to simply renaming it? I'm in a situation where I'm trying to run 2
clients in the same computer while running a tool called texmod at the same
time. Both these things are allowed by Anet. But in order to do that I need
to rename gw.exe to something like gw2.exe (just an example), and that's
what I'd like to know, if:

a) renaming the gw.exe to something else would be considered a modification
to the game client, and therefore a breach of the EULA

b) getting my copy of the game flagged as a hacked.exe

c) given my situation, ocurrance of a) or b) would result in punishment for
the accounts logged in from the renamed gw.exe

Thank you

Hello Pedro,

The answers to your questions are as follows:

A) A simple file rename is not a modification of the game client in-and-of itself. However, we do not support dual-boxing (which is running two instances of the game client on the same PC at the same time). Any performance and/or stability issues that surface because of that configuration are your responsibility to deal with. You assume those risks by running the game in an unsupported configuration.

B) Guild Wars is not meant to be run with *any* form of 3rd party software that modifies the game client (even "Texmod"). If you choose to run that application, then you run the risk of having the game account terminated because that is a violation of the User Agreement for Guild Wars. If you''d like to confirm this, you can speak with the Guild Wars Game Support Team and they can tell you what is and is-not allowed in the game environment.

C) There is no viable reason to rename a game client file for the purpose of dual-boxing. Even when running two instances of the same client on the same PC, the "Gw.exe" file doesn't need to be renamed. It's worth noting, though, that the resource demands of running 2 instances of Guild Wars is likely to cause problems with your PC. Our best suggestion is that you refrain from trying to do that in the first place.

Regards,
Mike C.
Guild Wars Technical Support
So renaming the .exe is allowed after all, but according to support, running Texmod isn't and could get accounts terminated. However looking at the amount of people running it without a problem, and after Gaile gave the green light to use it, it's good. c) is wrong though, running two gw.exe without gwx2 to twick the registry will get the 2nd terminated, so you either use gwx2 or use 2 copy's of gw.exe, with one of them renamed.
